DIY Vapo-Rub {Giveaway}

This giveaway is now closed…Winner is Heather!

Heading into Fall I always start to think about building up our immunity…and also natural home remedies for when we do get sick. One of my favorite things to use when my kids are congested or have bad coughs is this DIY Vapo-Rub. It’s so simple:

1 tsp. carrier oil (fractionated coconut oil)
3-5 drops essential oil (Breathe)

I double or triple this recipe and keep it on hand for when we get colds or coughs. I rub this on my children’s chests, backs, and the bottoms of their feet…especially at night. When I rub it on their feet, I put socks or footie pajamas on them as well. With younger kids, you want to make sure they won’t get the oil on their hands and then rub their eyes, stick their hands in their mouths, etc. I’ve noticed a significant decrease in coughing when using this blend.

Breathe can also be diffused into the air or inhaled directly from the bottle. This blend is also great for asthma.

Breathe is a respiratory blend of essential oils known to soothe and open the tissues in the respiratory system. Some of the essential oils in Breathe are:

  • Peppermint-antiseptic, antispasmodic, and anti-inflammatory. Used to ease breathing.
  • Eucalyptus radiata-antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antiviral. Eucalyptus is also an expectorant (helps dissolve mucus). It is a key ingredient in many cough and throat medicines and is used to ease breathing.
  • Melaleuca (tea tree)-antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral. Helps with bronchitis, coughs, and inflammation.
  • Lemon-antiseptic. Used to soothe coughs and sore throats.

I purchase all of my essential oils from doTERRA. All of their oils are CPTG (Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade) and are 100% pure…meaning they do not contain fillers or artificial ingredients like some other essential oils you might find at the drug store.

Would you like to win a bottle of Breathe? I’m giving one away! To enter: Simply leave a comment on this post telling me your experience with using essential oils. Have you used them before? Never even thought about it? Curious? An expert? (If so, tell me your favorite ways to use essential oils!)

This giveaway will close on Sunday, September 4th.

  2. i think this is the same company a friend of mine orders all of her essential oils through. she was raving about all of the benefits the other day and how pure the products are.

  3. Hi Krissa! I have never thought to use essential oils for this! My mom always used vicks when I was a kid, I think this would be great for my kids!

By the way, my maiden name is Morey:) There are four of us girls and they always called us the Morey girls. That's how I came up with it:)

  4. What a great reminder to make some of this before cold/flu season hits. I love essential oils. I especially love to use a few drops of lavender in the mop bucket to help my house smell nice. I also like to use them when I make lotion.

  5. i really want these oils. how many times can i leave a comment??

  6. Felicia Williams says:

I love to use clove and tea tree oil to keep my gums nice and healthy. Add a few drops of each in a carrier oil and then sprinkle a few drops of this concoction in a shot of water and swish it in your mouth for a couple minutes and swallow. Also builds your immune system. I do this after brushing am and pm.

  7. I've actually never used them myself, but have been meaning to try! I love them in some of the natural skincare products we use!

  8. OK, count me in, I would love to win this goody!

As for oils, I use a garlic oil in a carrier oil for ear aches… depending on what kind of ear infection it is (inner vs. outer) it can be used without having to take an antibiotic! It's great!!! Also I use Oregano oil to keep our immune system strong, especially when we're around others who have something that seems contagious!

Keep the info coming, I love to learn of new stuff!

I love it, I love it!

    • I've heard great things about Oregano oil…I'll have to try it soon. My favorite immunity booster is On Guard…a blend from doTerra.

  9. me want oils, yup yup yup

  10. Melaleuca Oil!!! I used it on Christopher eczema (and it hasn't returned), I put it on all of his cuts and bruises and I even rub it under his nose and on his chest when he has a cold!!

  13. i haven't used oils yet- but really looking forward to using this breathe oil i win 😉 i like trying the natural route before jumping in to the other stuff :)

  14. I've never tried this brand of essential oil and I'm not familiar with that blend. Sounds great though. I do make up a natural vapo-rub the same way though – with some eucalyptus, bay laurel and other oils. I also use the same type of oils to do a steam when I, or someone in my family has bad congestion.

  15. I've never used essential oils before, but my son gets nasty coughs so I'd love to try out your DIY vapo-rub!

  17. Sara de Neve says:

Very cool! I sometimes put a few drops of lavender in the tub before I shower if I've had a really stressful day. It helps to calm me down and relaxes me. I would love to win your oil! My twin boys have pretty bad asthma and sometimes when they are sick, not even breathing treatments help them sleep through the night. I gotta try this stuff! Thanks for sharing.

    • I do the same thing in my shower…I use a blend called Balance, it smells amazing! I love the smell of lavender too though.

  18. Hi!

Wanted to answer your question. Yes a little stinging is normal a vit c mask is essentially a mini face peel. If it's too strong though you can add pure aloe Vera gel. Hope that helps :)

  19. Oh and I wanted to tell you what an awesome and informative post this is! Love this kind of stuff!!

  20. I love essential oils! breath sounds like a great one to have on hand, especially during the winter months.

  21. I love the breath essential oil. I bought a bottle over a year ago. I put a few drops in my bath water.
    I would buy doterra again.

I am new to the essential oils lifestyle and am actually thinking about getting in to the business. There are not very many consultants in my area. I have been doing much research and am really liking doTerra's oils. I would love to win a bottle so that I can try out the brand to see if it's worth investing in.
