5 Uses for Lemon Essential Oil

It’s no secret that I’m a big fan of essential oils. I love using them in a variety of ways. Lemon essential oil is one of the basic essential oils I would recommend to someone looking to get started in using essential oils.

For one thing, it’s relatively inexpensive in the world of essential oils. Lemon is known to be uplifting and decrease stress and anxiety. It has a fresh and clean scent. There are also lots of ways to use it. Here are some of my favorites:

1. In my Water. I’ve mentioned this one before, but I love adding a drop of lemon essential oil to my water. I enjoy the flavor it gives and I also love the immunity building benefits it brings.

However, not all essential oil brands are safe for internal use, so please make sure you read the label carefully before using any essential oil internally. I use a brand called DoTerra, which is CPTG (Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade) and is safe to take internally. (Lemon essential oil is not recommended for internal use in children under 6.) Learn more about the health benefits of lemon here.

2. In Cleaning. You can add any essential oil to your homemade cleaners, but I love lemon for the kitchen. It has such a fresh and clean scent.

3. In a sugar scrub. One of my all time favorite sugar scrubs is this Lemon-Lime Sugar Scrub. It calls for a few other essential oils, but you can use just lemon if that’s all you have.

4. As a Goo-Be-Gone alternative. If you’ve ever had trouble getting a sticky sticker off a jar or other object, using lemon essential oil is an easy fix. Just drop a few drops on the sticker area, rub it around and then the sticker will scrape right off.

5. To soothe a sore throat or cough. Add a drop of lemon essential oil to a spoonful of honey to soothe a sore throat. Not only is lemon great to cut down the length of a cold and help with coughs,  it is also great for cold prevention and building immunity. (Lemon essential oil is not recommended for internal use in children under 6).

Lemon essential oil is also a great one to diffuse in a room because it cleanses the air and uplifts mood.

32 Before 32: Month 2 Update

I have one more month to go! I don’t feel like I made much progress this month, but I’m hoping over my Christmas break I can knock some more of these off the list.

For health and beauty:

1. Start each day with lemon water. I’ve been doing this consistently every day!
2. Give myself an herbal steam facial.
3. Take my CLO Daily. Haven’t been quite so consistent with this one.
4. Make some Echinacea Tincture. Finally bought some dried echinacea, so I’ll be able to start this one soon.
5. Oil Pull or swish with clove/tea tree oil daily. Haven’t been doing this enough!
6. Make my own toothpaste. DONE!
7. Treat myself to a mocha-frappuccino face mask.
8. Cut down on refined sugar.
9. Make this calendula salve.
10. Make my own facial clay mask.
11. Try this Kudzu-Apple Juice as a cold remedy for the kids. Actually tried this one for myself too. Instead of apple juice I used cranberry apple cider and it was great!
12. Make 3-in-1 Healing Balm (from Herbal Nurturing eBook) DONE!

This ricotta is so good!

To eat or drink:

13. Make Water Kefir. DONE!
14. Make some herb-infused honey. DONE! I made lavender infused honey.
15. Make Chai Concentrate. (I’ve been buying a powdered version at Trader Joe’s but want something better for me that I can make myself.) Made this once, but I don’t think it’s strong enough, so I’m going to try another batch soon.
16. Make my own vanilla extract. (Maybe I can even use this for Christmas gifts if I get started soon!) Update: I ordered my vanilla beans here. I have the vanilla started, but it won’t be done for another month or so.
17. Make Four Thieves Vinegar.
18. Plant some garlic. Uh-oh…I think I might be too late on this one!
19. Make some peanut butter.
20. Make this ricotta. DONE! This was so delicious and so easy. I highly recommend it.
21. Bake some bread.
22. Make my own “Larabars” (from the Healthy Snacks to Go eBook.)

For the home:

23. Make this hand soap. (Just add 1-2 T. castille soap in your soap dispenser with water.) DONE! So easy, and works great in foaming hand soap dispensers.
24. Make Beeswax Wood Polish.
25. Make this tub scrub…and then use it. DONE!
26. Make this homemade air freshener. DONE!
27. Replant some succulents.
28. Make herbal fire starters and enjoy lots of cozy fires on cold winter nights. Done! (That’s them in the photo above.)
29. “Spring” clean my mattress.
30. Remember to use my reusable produce bags! I’ve remembered once, so that’s better than nothing!

For fun:

31. Make playdough with the kids. (This was also on my summer fun list and never happened.) DONE! This was really easy and fun and I loved adding in essential oils for a nice scent.
32. Make a doorway puppet theater.

Charlotte playing with the playdough we made.

I think I may have to cheat a little and swap some of these out for some other fun ideas. I have a few in mind. Or, if you have any ideas for me, feel free to share!

Ten Uses for Peppermint Essential Oil {Giveaway}

I love using essential oils in my daily life…I even have a Pinterest board dedicated to Essential Oils! I have shared how I use essential oils to build immunity during cold and flu season, how to make your own “Vapo-rub”, and my top ten uses for essential oils. Today I want to share some of the ways I use peppermint essential oil and give you a chance to win your own bottle!

1. To make my own mint toothpaste. To make your own toothpaste simply mix together 5 T. of baking soda, 4 T. coconut oil, and 10 drops peppermint essential oil. You can also add stevia to sweeten your toothpaste. (Recipe found at Wee Waldorf.)

2. To flavor lip balm or other body care treatments. I recently made a basic salve and then added different essential oils to make a variety of salves. I had a little bit of the salve left over, so I poured it into some mini containers and added a couple drops of peppermint essential oil and had myself some peppermint lip balm. I also made this Mint-Eucalyptus Foot Scrub with peppermint and eucalyptus essential oils.

3. For digestive difficulties. Dilute several drops with a carrier oil (such as coconut oil or olive oil) and rub on your stomach to help with gas, tummy aches, indigestion, etc. You can also take peppermint internally if you are using a pure, therapeutic grade essential oil.

4. Headaches. Apply a couple drops to neck, temples, and forehead to relieve headache pain. Dilute with a carrier oil for children and for those with sensitive skin.

5. In cooking. Add peppermint essential oil to hot chocolate, coffee or tea, brownies, or any recipe that would taste good with peppermint flavoring. Again, make sure you only use CPTG oils, if you are using them internally.

6. To reduce fever. Dilute and rub on the bottoms of feet to reduce fever, or put 1-2 drops in a capsule to take internally. (Do not give internally to children under six.)

7. For bad breath. Add a drop on the tongue to reduce bad breath.

8. To improve alertness, concentration, and memory recall. Place a drop under the nose or diffuse in a room to increase alertness and improve memory. Or just open the bottle and inhale. This is useful on a long car trip to help you stay awake, or while studying and test taking to improve recall.

9. To cool down. Add several drops to a small spray bottle with distilled water and use as a spray to cool down on a hot day or after working out.

10. To relieve congestion. Inhale or place a drop on the tongue or below the nose to relieve congestion and sinus pressure.

From Pinterest to Real Life: Mint-Eucalyptus Foot Scrub

I LOVE Pinterest (find me here)…and I make myself feel better about spending time on it by trying to actually do some of the ideas I find there. Recently, Nicole at Simple Organic posted a succulent wreath that she made after seeing it on Pinterest and this month she’s starting a link-up party: From Pinterest to Real Life…count me in! I love making my own bath and body products, and I especially love using essential oils in everything I make…here’s a super quick and easy scrub that I made recently to give as gifts:

The recipe comes from Star Haus, and couldn’t be more simple:

2 C Fine or medium ground sea salt (use coarser salt for rougher feet)
1 C Coconut Oil
25 drops eucalyptus oil
15 drops peppermint oil

That’s it! Just combine the ingredients, put in a jar and enjoy. This scrub has a fresh and clean scent that is perfect for feet…but it does use salt, so be careful not to get in any cuts or it will sting! Here’s mine:

Here are some more projects that I have my eye on:

Ribbon Bobby Pin…so cute for Charlotte’s hair, and it’s not too early to be thinking of stocking stuffers!

Beeswax Wood Polish

No Sew Twirlers…I think Charlotte would love these!

So, what should I do next?

Cold Season Immunity Boosters

It’s that time of year…

I always intend to use these immunity boosters year round, but for some reason when Fall hits is when I really start to use them on a more regular basis. I guess it’s because Charlotte’s back in school and exposed to extra germs, and we all tend to get more colds during the Fall and Winter.

Here are some of the things I use to keep our family as healthy as possible during cold season:

Elderberry Syrup-I make a batch of Elderberry Syrup every month and the kids and I take a Tablespoon of it every day for cold and flu prevention. If you do get sick, you can take 1 teaspoon every 2-3 hours to help speed recovery. It’s super easy to make, and you can buy dried elderberries at your local health food store or at Mountain Rose Herbs. You can also buy elderberry syrup pre-made if you don’t want to make it yourself.

On Guard-I’ve talked before about using essential oils to boost immunity. But by far, one of my favorites is On Guard. It contains Wild Orange, Clove, Cinnamon, Eucalyptus and Rosemary and it smells a bit like Christmas. It can be used as prevention or as soon as you feel a cold coming on. This blend can be taken internally by putting a couple drops in water or in an empty capsule. For my kids, I rub some diluted On Guard on the soles of their feet. A few drops can also be added to a couple ounces of distilled water in a spray bottle and used to clean doorknobs, telephones, or anything that comes in contact with everyone’s hands on a regular basis.

Propolis Plus (for the kids)/Anti-Plague (adults)- Both from Vickie Sorensen’s Nature Works, these glycerin extractions help provide immunity as well as help us get over colds more quickly. The Anti-Plague isn’t the best tasting stuff out there, but there were several times last Winter when the entire family came down with a cold, and I never got it because I was diligent about taking my Anti-Plague. The Propolis Plus is formulated especially for kids and tastes sweet, so the kids love it. Both of these are a bit pricey, so I use them only when I feel like I’m starting to get sick, or if someone in the family is sick and I don’t want the rest of us to catch it.

Bulb of Garlic
Garlic-This is a well known remedy, because it works so well. If I’m feeling a cold coming on, I will crush up some garlic and mix it with honey on toast. If you can stand to eat it straight, that works great too. Using garlic in your cooking throughout cold season is a great way to build immunity as well. Here are some recipes that are heavy on the garlic:

Seriously Healing Garlic-Thyme Chicken Soup from Nourishing Days
Cold Kicker from Keeper of the Home
Four Thieves Vinegar from Nourished Kitchen–This is on my list of things to make…and could even be given as a gift.

And if you don’t want to eat it, you can try a Garlic Foot Bath. (I haven’t tried this one yet, but definitely want to!)

What are some tried and true immunity boosters you use to ward of sickness during the cold season?

DIY Vapo-Rub {Giveaway}

This giveaway is now closed…Winner is Heather!

Heading into Fall I always start to think about building up our immunity…and also natural home remedies for when we do get sick. One of my favorite things to use when my kids are congested or have bad coughs is this DIY Vapo-Rub. It’s so simple:

1 tsp. carrier oil (fractionated coconut oil)
3-5 drops essential oil (Breathe)

I double or triple this recipe and keep it on hand for when we get colds or coughs. I rub this on my children’s chests, backs, and the bottoms of their feet…especially at night. When I rub it on their feet, I put socks or footie pajamas on them as well. With younger kids, you want to make sure they won’t get the oil on their hands and then rub their eyes, stick their hands in their mouths, etc. I’ve noticed a significant decrease in coughing when using this blend.

Breathe can also be diffused into the air or inhaled directly from the bottle. This blend is also great for asthma.

Breathe is a respiratory blend of essential oils known to soothe and open the tissues in the respiratory system. Some of the essential oils in Breathe are:

  • Peppermint-antiseptic, antispasmodic, and anti-inflammatory. Used to ease breathing.
  • Eucalyptus radiata-antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antiviral. Eucalyptus is also an expectorant (helps dissolve mucus). It is a key ingredient in many cough and throat medicines and is used to ease breathing.
  • Melaleuca (tea tree)-antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral. Helps with bronchitis, coughs, and inflammation.
  • Lemon-antiseptic. Used to soothe coughs and sore throats.

I purchase all of my essential oils from doTERRA. All of their oils are CPTG (Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade) and are 100% pure…meaning they do not contain fillers or artificial ingredients like some other essential oils you might find at the drug store.

Would you like to win a bottle of Breathe? I’m giving one away! To enter: Simply leave a comment on this post telling me your experience with using essential oils. Have you used them before? Never even thought about it? Curious? An expert? (If so, tell me your favorite ways to use essential oils!)

This giveaway will close on Sunday, September 4th.

My Top Ten Uses for Essential Oils

For the past six months I’ve been using essential oils in a variety of ways in our home. Here are my top ten:

1. Lemon Oil in my Water-I put lemon oil in my water every day to build immunity and because it tastes great! However, not all essential oil brands are safe for internal use, so please make sure you read the label carefully before using any essential oil internally. I use a brand called DoTerra, which is CPTG (Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade) and is safe to take internally. Learn more about the health benefits of lemon here.

2. On Guard for Immunity-On Guard is one of my favorites. I mix it with a carrier oil and apply it to my children’s feet at bedtime. For myself, I put a few drops in a capsule and take it that way. Read more about On Guard and how it can protect you from getting sick here.

3. In my Homemade Deodorant-I use Melaleuca (Tea Tree) or a blend called Purify in my homemade deodorant to scent it. Learn more about how to make your own deodorant here.

4. In my Husband’s Facial Toner-I make a facial toner for my husband and use Melaleuca (Tea Tree) Oil in it. Tea Tree helps with acne, but you can also use lavender.

5. Breathe for a “Vapo-rub”-When my kids are congested or have a cough a use a blend called Breathe mixed with a carrier oil and rub it on their chest and on the bottoms of their feet. It’s a great natural alternative to Vapo-rub.

6. For Cleaning-I often take Lemon essential oil or a blend called Citrus Bliss and drop a few drops on a sponge to wipe down my counters. Not only does it clean but it also smells great!

7. Lavender for a Calming Room/Linen Spray-In a small glass spray bottle, I mix water with Lavender essential oil and use it as a room and linen spray. Lavender has calming properties so it’s great to use at bedtime.

8. To Soothe a Sore Throat-Add a drop of Lemon to honey and take it to soothe your throat. Or use On Guard: rub (diluted) on the throat externally or take a few drops internally to relieve sore throat.

9. In Bath & Body Care-I’ve made body oils, body scrubs, bath sachets, and lotion and scented them with lavender, ylang-ylang, wild orange, and other essential oils. I also enjoy dropping a few drops in the shower before I hop in.

10. Aromatherapy-I use a diffuser to diffuse essential oils in our home, especially in the kid’s rooms. It purifies the air and smells great.

Using Essential Oils to Build Immunity During Cold & Flu Season

I hate when my kids get sick…it’s so hard to see them so miserable and when they’re really young, it’s hard because they can’t always tell you what’s wrong. And then everyone gets sick and it wipes the whole family out for a couple of weeks.

Last winter, my youngest got a cold from his older sister…he was only 3-4 months old at the time and it turned into RSV. He had trouble breathing, we had to take him to the ER to have all the mucus sucked out (gross! and miserable for him,) and we ended up having to give him breathing treatments for several months! It was awful and giving breathing treatments every four hours wasn’t fun either.  I hated having him on the medication for so long, and for several months there we were ending up in the doctor’s office at least once a week…no joke.

My poor little guy sleeping during a breathing treatment.

So…I’m all about prevention this year! I’ve recently discovered the benefits of essential oils and have begun to use them for a variety of things, and one of those is to build immunity, as well as to help with natural healing when sick.

Why essential oils? Essential oils are 50-70 times more powerful than herbs. They can kill viruses and bacteria and they work fast. They are extracts from plants and are 100% natural.

Some commonly known ways to boost immunity can be aided and enhanced with the use of essential oils:

1. Get enough sleep. To help me relax and fall asleep at night instead of laying there with my mind racing about all I need to get done, I use Lavender essential oil and a blend called Serenity. I make a spray mist with some water and Lavender and mist it over my pillow and sheets before bed or I rub a few drops of Serenity on the bottoms of my feet. For kids, I put a couple drops of Lavender on a tissue and tuck it into their pillow.

2. Reduce stress. Again, Lavender essential oil is a great stress reducer, along with the blends Serenity and Balance.

3. Add lemon to your water daily to build immunity over time. I use Lemon essential oil when I don’t have fresh lemons on hand. Make sure you use a high quality brand however, because not all essential oils are pure enough for ingesting. (I use a brand called doTerra because they offer Certified, Pure, Therapeutic Grade oils). Read this post about more on the immunity benefits of adding lemon to your water.

4. On Guard Essential Oil. This is one of my favorite blends. It contains Wild Orange, Clove, Cinnamon, Eucalyptus and Rosemary and it smells like Christmas. It can be used as prevention or as soon as you feel a cold coming on. This blend can be taken internally by putting a couple drops in water. Or, for kids I rub some diluted On Guard on the soles of their feet. For daily immunity rub on soles of feet every night before bed or diffuse in a room regularly to eliminate airborne pathogens. It can also be diluted in a spray bottle and used to clean doorknobs, telephones, or anything that comes in contact with everyone’s hands on a regular basis.

Of course, don’t forget washing your hands regularly and all of the other commonly known ways to boost immunity.

Once you do get sick, essential oils can also help provide quick and natural healing.

Breathe-this is a respiratory blend made up of Laurel Leaf, Peppermint, Eucalyptus, Ravensara, Melaleuca (Tea Tree), and Lemon. It strengthens and fights infection in the sinuses and bronchioles. When my kids have a cough or congestion I rub Breathe (diluted with a carrier oil such as fractionated coconut oil) on their chests and the bottoms of their feet. It really helps eliminate coughing throughout the night. This blend can also be used for asthma and other breathing problems.

Lemon-add a drop to honey to soothe a sore throat.

On Guard-rub (diluted) on the throat externally or take a few drops internally to relieve sore throat.

Eucalyptus Radiata-use for congestion, sinus infections and to open airways. Dilute with carrier oil and rub on chest and neck for respiratory problems.

These are just a few of the ways to use essential oils for health and wellness in your family!
