The fact that we live in a world full of chemicals, pesticides, and other harmful substances can’t be denied.

Sure, we strive to eat good food and use natural cleaners, but what do we do about the unclean air and the unhealthy things that have already made their way into our homes and bodies?

Stacy shares 5 simple ways to detoxify your home and body so you and your family can live the healthiest life possible (and they are not as crazy as you might think)!

This week’s post is brought to us by Rachel of day2day joys:

For you to be able to turn your car on, you must have gas in the tank, for you to turn on a light in your room, you must have a light bulb, for you to even use your iPhone or laptop to read this now, the power has to be turned on and your device must be charged.

And to turn things on correctly, you have to take care of them because if you don’t, eventually they will break or run out of power.

Well, your body, namely your spine isn’t any different. But the majority of people do not know this concept.

What does that mean to turn your power on anyway? Please hop on over to Rachel’s blog to read the rest!

Is Your Mattress Toxic? Hidden Dangers in Your Sleeping Environment

Welcome back to the Raising Healthy Families series! Join us each week as we take a look at different ways to keep your family healthy and vibrant in a not-so-healthy world.

This week’s post is brought to us by Beth Ricci of Red and Honey:

We spend an average of eight hours a night sleeping. That’s fifty-six hours per week, or about one third of your whole life. It’s even more for babies and children!

Logic would dictate that we would desire a healthy and toxin-free spot to rest our weary heads each night, but unfortunately that can be difficult to find.

Conventional mattresses (and even many labelled “organic” or “natural”) contain toxic flame-retardant chemicals that off-gas continuously. Since you are laying directly on it for eight hours every day, this is most definitely a problem. There are multiple links between the toxins found in our sleeping environments and many health issues that plague our society today, such as asthma, allergies, headaches, and SIDS, to name a few.

You may be wondering what can we do about it. Is it really so bad? What if I can’t afford an organic mattress? Our family recently took steps to make our sleeping environments safer.

My Favorite Natural Household Products

Ideally, I’d love to make all my own household products for cleaning, laundry, and dishes, but the reality is that I’m just not there yet. So I’ve found some more natural products that work well for me and that I feel good about using in my home.

1. Laundry Detergent:

nellies
Nellie’s NLS-100T All Natural Laundry soda, 100 Load Tin, NLS-100T

I love this laundry soda! For one thing, the packaging is super fun. It works great and a little goes a long way. It’s also HE certified so works well in HE washing machines. I’ve also read lots of positive reviews from cloth diapering moms.

2. Fabric Softener:

Ecover Ecological Fabric Softener Morning Fresh — 32 fl oz

I do make my own dryer sheets and use this fabric softener to do that. Since I only use a little at a time, it also lasts me for awhile.

3. Stain Remover:

Biokleen Bac-Out w/Foaming Action Sprayer 32 oz.

I’ve had great luck with using Biokleen as my stain remover and have had the same bottle for well over a year and still have lots left.

4. Dishwasher Detergent:

grabgreen
GrabGreen Automatic Dishwashing Detergent, Thyme with Fig Leaf

I tried several different natural dishwasher detergents and didn’t have much luck, but this one did the trick! I also really enjoy the thyme with fig leaf scent, although there are other options available. Only problem is, we just moved to a house without a dishwasher, so now I’m on the lookout for a good dish soap. Feel free to share if you’ve found any good ones!

I’ll keep updating this post as I find more products that I’ve had success with and please do share with me any of your favorites as well!

My Two “Green” Goals for 2013

I’m keeping it simple (and hopefully ensuring success in meeting my goals,) and only setting two “green” goals for this year. This is not to say I may not end up implementing others as I go, but these are two of the bigger ones that I plan to accomplish.

1. Plant a small garden.

empty garden box

We just moved and one of the things I was excited to see at our new place was a small planter box. It’s not much, but I think it’s the perfect size to get me started with a small garden. I’ve always had an herb garden and had a couple tomato plants last year, but I’m looking forward to planting more this year. And I’m open to suggestions for what to plant!

2. Install a Clothesline.

I’ve been wanting to put up a clothesline for awhile now and I think there are some spots that will work at our new place. I’m planning on researching a bit and then shooting to have the clothesline up by the early Spring so I can enjoy its benefits all throughout Spring, Summer, and Fall.

So, that’s it! I’m slowly working on coming up with goals for this year and haven’t pinned them all down yet, but hoping to share the rest here shortly. I’ve been enjoying the 31 Days to Your Goal series over at lifeyourway.net and strongly recommend it if you’re looking for help setting and reaching your goals this year.

Top 5 Posts of 2012

I can’t believe 2012 is over…seems like it sped by! It was a great year for our family and I’m looking forward to all that 2013 has in store for us.

I love the time (although it’s not much) that I get to spend on this blog of mine. Here are the 5 most popular posts this year:

1. 10 of my Favorite DIY/Homemade Products:

2. Make Your Own Oil of Oregano:

3. Lavender Vanilla Sugar Scrub (although technically a post from last year…it was near the end of the year, so I’m counting it here, since it’s a popular one!)

4. 5 Uses for Lemon Essential Oil

5. Top 10 Uses for Lavender Essential Oil

I also participated in Nester’s 31 Days and posted for 31 days straight on Finding Meaning in the Mundane, which was a huge personal accomplishment for me.

With the holidays and moving a few days before Christmas, I’ve been a bit busy! I’ve been missing posting here and am hoping to get back to posting on a more regular basis soon.

Happy New Year’s Eve!
